Why we love it
Gerlos Alpenstraße gives an Alpine ride a flowing, scenic rhythm. Above Krimml, the road climbs through a succession of curves shaped around the mountainside, with woodland and widening valley views giving the ascent its character. There is real satisfaction in following a road whose bends fit so naturally into the terrain.
The Krimml Waterfalls give the landscape a memorable focal point. Roadside viewpoints let you stop and take in the falling water as part of the wider mountain scene. Give those views your full attention, then return to the bike ready to enjoy the next stretch.
Higher up, the horizon broadens towards the surrounding mountains. The Hohe Tauern and Kitzbühel Alps frame the journey, while the landscape around Durlaßboden adds another setting to explore. It is the combination of the curves and the scenery that makes Gerlos feel like a complete Alpine experience.
For Alpine Roads, this is a road that earns its place through the pleasure of being on it. A climb becomes a sequence of views, and a mountain connection becomes a highlight in its own right. Give it space in your journey, keep the riding measured and enjoy the way the road unfolds.
The ride
The modern Gerlos Alpenstraße rises above Krimml in a succession of flowing curves. Its 12 km core section climbs towards Pinzgauer Höhe, forming part of the wider connection between Salzburg and Tyrol. The operator gives the Alpine Road an altitude of up to 1,628 metres.
The scenery
Wooded slopes and valley views accompany the climb, with roadside viewpoints looking towards Krimml Waterfalls. Higher views take in the surrounding Hohe Tauern and Kitzbühel Alps. Durlaßboden adds a lake setting to the wider Gerlos landscape.
Alpine Roads tip
Make a roadside viewpoint part of the experience and stop safely to enjoy the view towards Krimml Waterfalls. Choose good visibility for the mountain panorama, and check the operator’s current road information before setting out.
