Why we love it
Predil makes the border part of the adventure. A winding road threads the Julian Alps between Slovenia and Italy, with forests gathered around the bends and mountains rising above the crossing. The pleasure is in the way the journey keeps unfolding.
From the Bovec area, the Slovenian approach follows the Koritnica valley into steeper mountain country. Old fortifications add a tangible layer to the scenery, reminders that this has long been a crossing between regions. The road gives you plenty to take in as well as corners to enjoy.
On the Italian approach, Lake Predil brings a fresh colour to the scene. Its blue-green water lies among woods below the surrounding peaks, adding a memorable lakeside chapter to the wider ride. Leave room to enjoy that setting.
Predil has the satisfying rhythm of a road that carries you somewhere: bends to engage you, changing views to hold your attention and a border that opens the next chapter. Ride with a little patience and the details start to stand out, from the forested slopes to the shape of the mountains around the lake. It is a crossing to savour for the riding between places as much as the places themselves.
The ride
Predil, known as Predel in Slovenia, crosses the Slovenian–Italian border at 1,156 metres. It links the Bovec area with Cave del Predil through a landscape of mountain slopes and wooded bends. Changing gradients and turns give the crossing its rhythm, calling for a measured, attentive ride.
The scenery
The Koritnica valley shapes the Slovenian approach, with Julian peaks rising above the road. On the Italian side, Lake Predil adds blue-green water to a setting of woods and mountain slopes. Fortifications bring another visible layer to this border landscape.
Alpine Roads tip
Let the scenery be part of the crossing. Enjoy Lake Predil from a safe stopping place when your wider journey takes you that way, and give the wooded bends your attention. Check current pass information before travelling.
