Why we love it
The road between Vorderriß and Wallgau invites you to enjoy the Alps at river level. Here the landscape stretches along the upper Isar, with woodland, pale gravel and mountain slopes giving the journey a different shape. The pleasure is in following the valley and allowing the scenery to develop around you.
There is a welcome intimacy to a road like this. Instead of looking towards a distant summit, you notice the nearby details: the line of the trees, the light on the riverbed and the mountains appearing beyond. A considered pace gives those details room to become part of the ride.
The wider Karwendel setting adds scale without taking away that close connection to the valley. Stop somewhere suitable and the contrast becomes clear: a river landscape in the foreground, with a much larger mountain world beyond it.
We like this road for the variety it brings to an Alpine journey. It offers a different kind of satisfaction from a high crossing, built around bends, woodland and the presence of the Isar. Give it an unhurried place in the day and enjoy the simple pleasure of riding through a landscape with a strong character of its own.
The ride
A scenic road between Vorderriß and Wallgau in the upper Isar landscape. Its valley setting and changing woodland views give the riding a character distinct from a high mountain pass.
The scenery
The Isar’s river landscape, pale gravel banks, woodland and the wider Karwendel mountains shape the setting.
Alpine Roads tip
Give the river and mountain backdrop your full attention at a proper scenic stop.

Scenic and absorbing, with a close connection to woodland and river country rather than a summit-focused ride.
