Why we love it
Dark forest, open ridges and a long view west: the Schwarzwaldhochstraße has a landscape and rhythm all its own. This is the northern Black Forest’s celebrated high road, associated with the B500 and the scenic connection between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt.
The pleasure is in the changing perspective. A winding climb leads towards the heights, then the road follows a landscape of wooded slopes, ridges and valleys. Enjoy the bends at a measured pace and make room for the moments when the trees give way to a broader view. In clear weather, the outlook reaches across the Rhine plain towards France.
Around Mummelsee and Ruhestein, the Black Forest becomes much more than a backdrop. Lakes, forest and the national park give the road a strong sense of place, with reasons to stop and explore beyond the saddle.
Its appeal for a mountain journey is the variety it adds: forest riding, far-reaching views and the satisfying continuity of a high scenic road. Leave room to stop, follow the changing landscape and enjoy a ride that makes the forest itself the destination.
The ride
The Schwarzwaldhochstraße climbs into the northern Black Forest heights and continues through a landscape of ridges, forest and valleys. Its winding character and panoramic stretches invite a measured rhythm, with plenty of interest beyond the next bend.
The scenery
Wooded slopes, high ridges and lakes shape the landscape around the road. Clear weather opens views across the Rhine plain towards France, while Mummelsee and the national park around Ruhestein offer a closer encounter with the Black Forest.
Alpine Roads tip
A clear-weather visit gives the long views their best chance. Allow space for a stop at a signed viewpoint and enjoy the landscape while parked. Check current road information before travelling.
