Why we love it
A village above two thousand metres gives Kühtai its own sense of place. The road climbs into a landscape of Alpine meadows and rugged peaks, with the settlement sitting high among the mountains. Arriving here feels like reaching the heart of the crossing.
The pleasure is in the way the scenery grows with the ride. Lower valleys give way to open slopes; buildings appear against a backdrop of rock and ridgeline. Around Kühtai, the mountain setting has a generous scale that invites you to look beyond the next bend.
On the bike, the road offers a satisfying succession of changes: climbing sections, corners that hold your attention and the shift from one valley landscape to another. Settle into a measured rhythm and let the crossing unfold. There is plenty to enjoy without hurrying through the high ground.
Kühtai combines a mountain-road ride with the character of a place people come to stay. That makes it memorable as a journey and as a pause in the wider adventure. Leave room to take in the village setting, the meadows and the peaks above it. This is Tyrol at altitude, with the road carrying you straight into the picture.
The ride
The Kühtai High Alpine Road is a mountain crossing in Tyrol, connecting the Sellrain Valley with the Ötztal side and reaching its namesake village at 2,020 metres. Bends, changing gradients and the progression into high Alpine scenery give the ride an engaging rhythm.
The scenery
Alpine meadows, rocky ridges and the buildings of the high village give Kühtai a distinctive setting. The approaches add forests and valley landscapes, while the open upper slopes let the surrounding mountains shape the view.
Alpine Roads tip
Leave room to enjoy the high village setting. Ride with attention through the settlements and open Alpine ground, and take in the views from suitable stopping places. Check current road and weather information before travelling.
Rider character
Flowing and scenic. An engaging Tyrolean mountain ride with a succession of bends and a strong sense of reaching the high country.
Pairs perfectly with
Hahntennjoch
Another Tyrolean crossing for a wider mountain journey, with the rock and scree of the Lechtal Alps adding a different setting.
Timmelsjoch / Passo del Rombo
A further High Alpine Road in the Ötztal region, adding an Austrian–Italian crossing to a broader mountain-road journey.
Ideas for a wider journey. We shape the combination around the full riding day.
