Why we love it
Road, rock and sky set the mood at Timmelsjoch. The crossing draws you into exposed high Alpine country, where the road becomes a fine line through an enormous landscape. Meadows and pine give way to barer slopes, and the mountains take over the view.
The riding has a sense of occasion. A run of bends carries you higher, and tighter turns bring you back towards the mountainside. There is satisfaction in keeping the bike composed while the views keep changing around you. This is a road that rewards attention to the ride and time to appreciate the setting.
Timmelsjoch is also Passo del Rombo, an Austrian–Italian crossing between the Ötztal and South Tyrol's Passeier valley. The contrast between the high pass and the greener valleys gives the journey its breadth. The landscape develops through the crossing, from Alpine pasture to a world shaped by rock, weather and altitude.
Let that progression be part of the pleasure. The climb, the border and the changing mountain scenery belong together. Timmelsjoch offers the feeling of travelling through the Alps on a road that makes the mountains central to the journey.
The ride
Timmelsjoch, or Passo del Rombo, links the Austrian Ötztal with the Passeier valley in South Tyrol, Italy. The crossing reaches 2,474 metres. Changing bends and gradients give the High Alpine Road its character, with tighter sections that reward measured, composed riding.
The scenery
Alpine pasture and weathered pine give way to exposed slopes and bare mountain terrain. Around the high crossing, rock and open sky set the scale. The greener valleys add another layer to a landscape that develops through the ride.
Alpine Roads tip
Give the high mountain setting your time and attention. Choose good visibility, keep the tighter bends unhurried and enjoy the panoramas from suitable stopping places. Check the operator's current road and weather information before travelling.
Rider character
Iconic, scenic and technical. A high Alpine ride for riders who enjoy changing gradients, considered cornering and big mountain scenery.
