Why we love it
Plöckenpass gives a mountain crossing a strong sense of place. Around you, the Carnic Alps rise in steep, rocky folds; below, woodland softens the mountainsides. The road answers that terrain with a succession of bends, hairpins and galleries. It invites you to ride attentively, settle into each turn and enjoy the satisfaction of a line chosen well.
Known in Italy as Passo di Monte Croce Carnico, this is a meeting point between Carinthia and Carnia. Names, villages and mountain traditions give the crossing a character of its own. Above Timau, the mountains make the scale especially tangible, with rock faces and the road sharing a remarkably close relationship.
We love the combination of an engaging ride and a setting that stays with you. There is drama in the engineering, texture in the wooded slopes and a rewarding sense of travelling through the mountains. Stop where it is permitted, look towards the surrounding peaks, and let the scenery complete the experience.
Plöckenpass earns its place as a distinctive Carnic crossing, full of mountain character and the pleasure of an absorbing road.
The ride
Plöckenpass crosses the Carnic Alps between Austria and Italy. The road’s distinctive mountain character comes from its bends, hairpins and galleries, shaped around steep terrain. It rewards an attentive, measured rhythm and the simple satisfaction of riding a road that works closely with the mountainside.
The scenery
Rocky Carnic summits frame the crossing, with Pal Piccolo and Collinetta beside the pass. Wooded slopes and the landscape above Timau add texture and depth to the views. This is a mountain setting to appreciate from permitted stopping places as well as from the saddle.
Alpine Roads tip
Give the hairpins your full attention and save the longer look at the mountains for a permitted stopping place. Check current official road notices before setting out, as restrictions can affect the crossing.
