Why we love it
A lake on the border, a road cut through rock and the Carnic Alps all around: Nassfeld packs a surprising amount of character into one crossing.
Known in Italy as Passo Pramollo, it links Austria’s Gailtal with the Val Canale in Friuli. That change of country gives the ride a sense of movement through the mountains, while the road provides plenty to hold your attention. The winding approach from Pontebba, tight bends and rock tunnel give the crossing an engaging, technical edge. Settle into an unhurried rhythm and enjoy the satisfaction of each section unfolding.
At the 1,530-metre pass, the landscape offers a different mood. A small lake sits among mountain slopes and the buildings of the border resort, with the Carnic ridges rising around it. It is an inviting place to pause, take in the setting and let the ride breathe.
The combination is what makes Nassfeld appealing: involved riding, a distinctive lakeside setting and a real connection between two Alpine regions. Give the crossing time in your journey and it becomes a memorable part of the mountains themselves.
The ride
An Austrian–Italian crossing through the Carnic Alps, linking the Gailtal and Val Canale. The winding Pontebba approach, tight turns, steep sections and a tunnel through the rock give Nassfeld its engaging character.
The scenery
Carnic ridges, mountain pastures and a small lake frame the pass. The lakeside resort gives the top a lived-in border character, with the Italian landscape opening away towards the Pontebba area.
Alpine Roads tip
Make room for a pause by the pass lake. Enjoy the scenery while stopped, then give the tighter bends and rock tunnel your full attention. Check current road conditions before setting out.
