Why we love it
Stelvio makes its promise visible. Above Trafoi, the road folds back on itself across the mountainside, a ladder of hairpins that draws the eye towards the pass. You can see the ride ahead of you, bend after bend, and that is part of the pleasure.
From Prato, the climb builds towards that famous upper section. The tight turns give each stage its own small sense of achievement: another change of direction, another stretch of mountainside gained, another view opening behind. Give the road your attention and enjoy the satisfaction of a steady, composed ascent.
Looking back from a suitable stopping place is one of Stelvio's great rewards. The bends resolve into that extraordinary pattern, and the scale of the climb suddenly becomes clear.
The onward journey gives the day a second act. Continue towards Bormio through the Braulio valley, or connect with Umbrail for a Swiss–Italian mountain ride with a different character. Both deserve time in the plan.
Stelvio earns its place through demanding riding and unmistakable scenery. A road you have seen in pictures becomes a line you can trace through the mountains, one bend at a time.
The ride
Stelvio links Prato allo Stelvio in South Tyrol with Bormio in Lombardy. The celebrated climb from Prato has 48 hairpins on the way to the pass. Tight turns shape the climb, while the Bormio side brings the Braulio valley and tunnels into the journey. Umbrail joins the Bormio approach below the summit, opening another route towards Switzerland.
The scenery
Above Trafoi, the upper hairpins spread across the mountainside in the pattern that makes Stelvio instantly recognisable. The road becomes part of the view, set against exposed high Alpine slopes. On the Bormio side, the Braulio valley's rock walls and tunnels give the mountain landscape a different shape.
Alpine Roads tip
For the classic hairpin ascent, climb from Prato through Trafoi, then shape the onward ride towards Bormio or Umbrail. Choose a daylight window with a favourable forecast and leave time for stops. Check official access reports and cycling-event closures before departure; confirm Umbrail separately if it is part of your route.
Rider character
Iconic, technical and scenic. A concentrated mountain ride for riders who enjoy tight turns, careful positioning and the satisfaction of seeing a long climb unfold.
