Why we love it
Umbrail draws you into the mountains one stage at a time. From Santa Maria in Val Müstair, hairpins lift you through larch forest before the road follows the Muranzina towards the pass. The changing setting gives the climb its character, carrying you from the woods into the openness of the upper valley.
This is a ride to enjoy at a measured rhythm. Let the bike settle between turns, keep your attention on the road, and save the longer looks for a stop. There is real satisfaction in a climb that asks you to be present and rewards you with a growing sense of height.
Beyond the pass, the road crosses into Italy and meets the road climbing from Bormio. Continue towards Stelvio for another high crossing, or turn towards Bormio for the descent. That connection makes Umbrail a natural partner in a longer Alpine journey, with its own distinct mountain atmosphere to savour along the way.
We love the way the road builds anticipation. Forest, river and high country carry you towards the border, then leave you wanting to see what lies around the next mountain. Give the climb time, enjoy its changing character and let the journey unfold.
The ride
The climb from Santa Maria combines forest hairpins with a stretch following the Muranzina towards the pass. Just beyond the summit, the road enters Italy and joins the Bormio–Stelvio road. Its succession of turns invites measured, attentive riding throughout the climb.
The scenery
Larch woodland gives way to the more open setting of the upper valley, with the Muranzina accompanying the climb. The changing landscape is part of Umbrail's appeal: make time for a stop to take it in.
Alpine Roads tip
Climb from Santa Maria to enjoy the progression from forest to high country, then continue towards Stelvio when both roads are open. Allow time for stops along the climb. Check Swiss and Italian road information before setting out, and bring a warm layer: high-pass temperatures can be low even in summer.
Rider character
Scenic and absorbing, with technical hairpins that reward a measured rhythm and a changing landscape that holds your attention from valley to pass.
